INTERNET AND WEB SECURITY

Dr. S. R. Subramanya
University of Missouri--Rolla
USA

Abstract

The proliferation of the Internet and Web have apparently resulted in an explosion of the data transmissions over networks. To sustain the increased traffic, newer technologies and protocols have been deployed. Ever more sensitive and strategic data is stored on Web sites and transmitted over the Internet, although, the Internet and Web have not been designed to handle secure handling of data. Recently, several schemes (Secure Socket Layer, PGP, S/MIME, etc.) have been developed to provide a layer of security to the Internet and Web. Despite these, the Internet and Web are vulnerable for attacks from a variety sources which is detrimental to the (a) availability, (b) integrity, (c) confidentiality, and (d) authenticity of information. Schemes for ensuring resilience to attacks and quick recovery are critical to every application.
This tutorial is intended to give a good overview of the principles and practices of various aspects of Internet and Web security. It also presents in-depth technical details of several key techniques used.
