Tutorials Speaker

Dr. S. R. Subramanya
University of Missouri--Rolla

The proliferation of the Internet and Web have apparently resulted in an explosion of the data transmissions over networks. To sustain the increased traffic, newer technologies and protocols have been deployed. Ever more sensitive and strategic data is stored on Web sites and transmitted over the Internet, although, the Internet and Web have not been designed to handle secure handling of data. Recently, several schemes (Secure Socket Layer, PGP, S/MIME, etc.) have been developed to provide a layer of security to the Internet and Web. Despite these, the Internet and Web are vulnerable for attacks from a variety sources which is detrimental to the (a) availability, (b) integrity, (c) confidentiality, and (d) authenticity of information. Schemes for ensuring resilience to attacks and quick recovery are critical to every application.
This tutorial is intended to give a good overview of the principles and practices of various aspects of Internet and Web security. It also presents in-depth technical details of several key techniques used.

Dr. S. R. Subramanya received his B.E. degree in Electronics Engineering from Bangalore University, M.E. degree in Electrical Communication Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, M.S. degree in Computer Science from Indiana University, Bloomington, and the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from George Washington University, Washington, D.C. He was the recipient of Richard Merwin memorial award at George Washington University in 1996, and
Grant-In-Aid of Research award from Sigma-Xi scientific society in 1997. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri--Rolla. He has been teaching courses and conducting research Multimedia Systems and Computer Security. He has presented tutorials on Multimedia Systems and Computer Security at several conferences. He has also developed course material for distance education on Multimedia Systems and Computer Security, which have been offered to employees at different Boeing facilities.
