About Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta or simply Yogya, is the main tour destination in Java island of Indonesia. Located at the foot of the active Merapi volcano, Yogyakarta is a city with outstanding history and cultural heritage. Yogyakarta was the central of the ancient Mataram palace (1575-1640), and till now the kraton (the sultan's palace) exists in its real functions. Besides, Yogyakarta has numerous thousand-year-old temples as inheritances of the great ancient kingdoms, such as the Borobudur, and Prambanan temples.

In addition to being a cultural city, Yogyakarta is popular for being a students city. There are 83 private and public universities and higher education institutions embodying more than 267.562 students from all over Indonesia and the world.

Gamelan, classical and contemporary Javanese dances, the wayang kulit leather puppet theater and other expressions of traditional art will keep the visitor spellbound. Local craftsmen excel in the arts of batiks, silver and leather work.

Within the culture of Yogyakarta, there still live a lot of legends such as the believed mystical relationship of Mount Merapi the volcano, "The Lord of the Southern Ocean", and the Sultan - king of the Yogyakarta kingdom.

The conference will be held under the auspices of His Excellency Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, king of the historical sultanate of Yogyakarta and also the elected governor of the modern Special Region of Yogyakarta.
