Volumes of data growing beyond the performance and storage capacity of traditional data warehouses and database management systems
are commonly referred to as Big Data. Datasets in this soaring research area are awkward to handle in terms of volume,
velocity and/or variety on traditional computing systems. The flexibility and scalability of Cloud Computing is a key enabling technology
for near real-time Big Data processing and analytics.
The panel team, which will include four prominent researchers in the area, will discuss the most recent topic of exploring big opportunities of big data integration in Multi-Disciplinary Domains.
Wenny Rahayu, La Trobe University, Australia
Wenny Rahayu is currently an Associate Professor and the Head of Data Engineering and Knowledge Management research at the Department of Computer Science and Computer Engineering La Trobe University. The main focus of her research is the integration and consolidation of heterogeneous data and systems to support a collaborative environment within a highly data-rich environment. To date, she has been the principle investigator or one of the chief investigators of 2 ARC (Australian Research Council) Industry Linkages, Large Industry collaboration grants, International grants (Japan JSPS and Australia Indonesia AIGRP), International Standard Bodies such as Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), VPAC (Victoria Partnership for Advanced Computing), and the AAS (Australia Academy of Science). In the last 10 years, she has published two authored books, three edited books and more than 100 research papers in international journals and proceedings. She has supervised to completion 10 PhDs, around 30 Honours, and 10 Masters students.
Maria Indrawan-Santiago (Monash University, Australia)
Dr Maria Indrawan-Santiago works in the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University.Maria received her PhD from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Her areas of interests and expertise include data management, data mining, information retrieval and pervasive computing. She has authored numerous articles in these topic areas and has served on a number of program committees of international conferences. In 2009 she spent her sabbatical at the San Diego Supercomputer Centre (SDSC) and California Institute of Telecommunication and Information Technology (CALIT2) in the USA, working with scientists from such varied fields as computer science, biochemistry and physics. Through exposure to a number of e-science projects at those institutions, she developed a greater interest in management of large data set and provenance of data in workflow systems.
Kjetil Nørvåg (Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway)
Kjetil Nørvåg received the Dr. Ing. degree in computer science from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2000. He is a professor in the Department of Computer and Information Science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. He has been a visiting researcher at INRIA in Paris, Athens University of Economics and Business, and Aalborg University. He has published more than 130 papers in international refereed conferences and peer reviewed journals. His major research interests include distributed and parallel database systems, large-scale data management, information retrieval, and text mining.
Jaroslav Pokorny (Charles University, Czech Republic)
Jaroslav Pokorny received his Ph.D. degree in theoretical cybernetics from Charles University, Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1984. He is a full professor of Computer Science at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, Prague. He is also a visiting professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of Czech Technical University, Prague. He has published more than 290 papers and books on data modeling, relational databases, query languages, XML technologies, and data organization. His current research interests include semi-structured data, Web technologies, indexing methods, and social networks. He is a member of ACM and IEEE. He works also as the representative of Czech Republic in IFIP.
Vlado Stankovski (University of Ljubljana, Slovenia)
Vlado Stankovski, Eng.Comp.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., began his career in 1995 as consultant and later as project manager with the Fujitsu-ICL Corporation in Prague. From 1998-2002 he worked as researcher at the University Medical Centre in Ljubljana. From 2003 on, he is with the Department of Construction Informatics at the University of Ljubljana. His research interests are in semantic and distributed-computing technologies. He has been involved with research projects including the DataMiningGrid, InteliGrid, mOSAIC Cloud, GridForum.si, AgentGrid, SiGNet and ZeVS. His also has experience in applications of machine learning techniques to engineering and medical problems.
